Winter Term
Postponed until 2013
The Winter term is where we develop key building and bushcraft skills.
Dates
Boat Building and Design
9am-5pm, Monday-Friday, Pavones, Costa Rica
We work together to construct a 30' sailing Umiak, these boats have been built for thousands of years and sojourn some of the earths roughest seas. We also design and build different kayaks from mostly local materials. We craft these boats in Pavones within a stone's throw of the beach, the perfect place to test out our vessels upon completion.
Primitive and Bushcraft Skills
9am-5pm, Monday-Friday, Pavones, Costa Rica
Primitive Skills instructor Brian Schuch teaches us bushcraft and survival skills including fire by friction, bow making, flintknapping, trapping, and primitive hand tools. We also learn scout skills such as stalking, camouflage and tactical thinking. We work together to create a primitive village from the ground up. Learn from local natives about the skills they have passed along in this area, from plant ID and use, to natural poisons.
Umiak Expedition*
24/7, Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica
You become adept at piloting a primitive sailboat along the coast, learning local fishing techniques and how to make primitive fishing equipment. We take our newly built sailing Umiak on a 2-week expedition with our local guide along the coast and up rivers around Golfo Dulce and the Osa Peninsula, living primitively and leaving "no trace" in our path.
